Decision on Assessment for Class 1-9 Students Soon: Karnataka Education Minister

Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar Monday convey the message that a decision on assessment for students in classes 1 to 9 in the state would be decided soon, in the wake of offline physical classes being suspended due to the ongoing second wave. “The decision mark on how they (students of class 1-9) will be assessed for the academic year 2020-21 will be taken in a couple of days,” Education Minister S Suresh Kumar said. Besides, education department officials, 44 other people including a representative of unaided schools, parent’s association and educationalist were present at the meeting. Everyone gave their opinion. We will take all of them into consideration before coming to a conclusion,” Education Minister Kumar said on Monday.

A press release from the minister’s office said about the delegates favoured some sort of assessment. Most believed that without assessment, it will be impossible to judge where children are lagging and how to equip them for the next class. They also fear children will lose interest in the next grade if learning gaps are not addressed.

Due to the rise of covid cases, many other states have scrapped exams and promoted children from grades 1-9, while Karnataka is yet to make a decision. Last year, students of these grades were not assessed.
